Artist - Erin HINZ

New artistic talent surrounds Dallas art appreciators who mostly prefer recognizing that talent in a
gallery setting. Remember, don’t lose sight of the fact lots of interesting artists don’t have gallery
affiliation. When a gallery comes forward to sponsor and share undiscovered talent it deserves
commendation. One gifted artist in mind is Erin Hinz with two beautifully executed graphite
drawings on exhibit in the Mary Tomas Gallery summer group show. Mary, a medium
newcomer to Dragon Street identifies her gallery expressly with the words
“fine art for the senses.

A recent recipient of an MFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, this 26-year old without
doubt mastered the exacting technique of realistic drawing (of a made-up world)
because of an enviable natural ability assisted by training in a top art school. Origins
of the explicit imagery and the subliminal stories they tell fall out of Erin’s unique
imagination beside the study of art periods, specifically Rococo’s romantic French
painters Boucher, Fragonard and Watteau who’s perfectly posed females and
heavenly settings elegantly exaggerate prettiness over depth of thought.
SPILLING OVER
“The drawings are allegories, rather than narratives, which seek to explore abstract
notions of ‘beauty,’ ‘eroticism’, and ‘freedom.’ Influenced by 18th century kitsch, this
world is densely interwoven with my own sensations, memories and ideas. The intricately
worked areas invite the viewer to explore the oddities drawn from my mind, becoming a
type of surrealist hidden picture. I enjoy the technical challenge of relying on minimalist
shades of gray while striving to create a lush Rococo inspired environment. Its overblown
decorative motifs and erotic content inform each other and depend on each other to
make meaning. My work, particularly its luscious style expresses a similar connection
between eroticism and freedom.

Show runs through July 17, 2010
