LAGO VISTA GALLERY AT RICHLAND COLLEGE
FEB 09 // 4-7PM
Richland College’s Lago Vista Gallery is proud to present “Anima Sola” by Dallas
based artist Tina Medina. Medina’s works deliver intimate portraiture concerned
with cultural identity and symbolic investigation. The works take to the form of
small embroidered images, watercolors, and other materials as Medina explores
the boundaries between the kitsch and profound. The exhibition will run from
February 23 through March 23, 2011 with a closing reception on Wednesday,
March 23rd  at 2-3 PM.

The title of the exhibition, “Anima Sola,” translates as Forsaken Soul or Lonely Soul,
a primarily catholic symbol referencing a soul in purgatory or stasis. The works in
the exhibit reference a border between representation and recognition, offering
immersion into Spanish, Catholic, popular culture and Mesoamerican imagery
influenced by personal narrative.

Medina says of her work: “Recently I've found embroidery to be an interesting
process. Satisfyingly tactile, yet slow and tedious to build, embroidery is not
traditionally thought of as an art process. Usually this technique is associated
with gender roles and kitsch, but I use embroidery as another artist might use
a pencil. When I embroider I respond to the thread in the cloth intuitively and
follow no patterns.”
