Andrew DeCaen Artist Statement: This exhibition shows Andrew DeCaen’s continued interests in the themes of food and eating. The exhibition features new silverpoint drawings, lithographs, screen prints, etchings, and paper sculpture. These new works focus especially on the time and manner in which we eat our meals. Meal scenes in film are the inspiration in several series of images, while others are observed or imagined scenes of people eating. These images focus on the moment of the meal, the body language, the time shared, and the transformation that might occur at the table. These figurative images are pared or layered with imagery that connects the scene to food science, religious themes, and the paper ephemera that surrounds the food’s production. The sculptural works extend the ideas of the flat imagery with objects that are both strange and familiar. This exhibition aims to be a celebration of the mundane but complex act of eating |
