| RISING Gallery proudly presents Denver based husband and wife artists Tyler & Monica Aiello and their conjoined solo shows collectively titled "Galileo's Garden". This show marks the Aiello's first solo exhibition in Texas. After recently showing works in Jackson, WY and Denver, CO, the Aiello's are bringing their current bodies of work to Dallas, Texas at RISING gallery. During the past several years, the Aiellos' careers have expanded nationally and they have been engaged in numerous artistic and outreach pursuits - including museum and gallery exhibitions, public and corporate art commissions, residencies and educational programming. Painter Monica Petty Aiello is known for her intriguing, mixed-media works on panel that fuse her love of craft and content. Monica has spent several years fostering relationships with the NASA community and often consults with noted planetary scientists in the development of her geologically-inspired works. This dialog has greatly enriched her process, allowing her to develop innovative painting techniques to interpret planetary surfaces. After extensive research, she creates her lush, glassy pieces by meticulously layering acrylic, varnish, ink and fiber like strata to emulate the geomorphology of the planets and moons within our Solar System. Monica's work has been recognized by both art and science institutions. Last year, she mounted a large exhibition at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where she also taught at the Center's Bemis Art School. Monica's show, entitled Frozen/Inferno, was presented in tandem with the Smithsonian's NASA Art Program Exhibition and the historical, space-inspired works of Vance Kirkland. Last winter, Monica was invited by NASA to present her works in Washington DC., and recently was a special guest at a NASA Educator's Workshop, Small Bodies, Big Concepts. In 2009, she was the Lossett Visiting Scholar at the University of Redlands in California where she co-taught an interdisciplinary course on art and geology with scientific collaborator Dr. Julie Rathbun Along with her husband Tyler, she has had shows at Space Gallery in Denver, CO and Diehl Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming where the couple also helped produce week of Art and Science programming. Their activities included kids classes and a lecture series with noted scientists Dr. David Grinspoon (Curator of Astrobiology at the DMNS) and Astronomer, Dr. Tyler Nordgren. Monica's work has been published in Dr. Nordgren's recently released book, Skies Above, Earth Below - A Guide to Astronomy in National Parks. She currently has work on loan to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, and her paintings continue to be collected by museums, private and corporate patrons internationally. Tyler Aiello's elegant sculpture is also widely shown and collected across the country. He draws inspiration from mathematics, biology, botany and chemistry - creating sensual, biomorphic forms out of industrial materials such as steel, wood, and light. He is known for his meticulous craftsmanship, laborious process and attention to detail - often building his own tools to create his work. The series at RISING investigates microbiological, botanical and oceanic life forms. His work relates so well to his wife's, providing ample context regarding the nature of science, art, and commonality of forms found throughout the universe. RISING looks forward to showcasing Tyler's continuation of the series that was so successfully unveiled at Space Gallery earlier in the year. Tyler's work is prized by architects, designers and consultants nationally. Over the past few years, he has focused primarily on large-scale commissions for public and corporate art. He was recently commissioned by the City of Denver to create Leaves of Grass, a large outdoor steel sculpture for the historical Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. He has also created large-scale works for Alexan Development in Littleton, Colorado; Terranea Resorts in Palos Verdes, California; and corporate collections in Seattle and San Antonio. Recently, his work has been featured at Space Gallery in Denver, Colorado; Diehl Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming; the Center for Visual Art in Denver and at the Madden Museum of Art. With his wife, Tyler is deeply committed to sharing his knowledge and experience, and the couple has developed a host of educational programs for children. Each summer they are resident artists at the Mizel Museum in Denver and at the Art Association of Jackson Hole where they teach a popular art and science summer camp. Last year they launched an educational enrichment program, Da Vinci Club, which explores science and engineering through art making. Michael Burnett, curator of Denver based Space Gallery, says this about their works, 'It is testament to their commitment in their field that each year the Aiello's are able to continue to surprise art patrons with inspiring new material which continues to amaze and dazzle. The combination of intense research, technical mastery of materials and painstaking execution makes their work entirely unique and equally breathtaking. Rarely does interpretation of the natural world surpass the original but I think in the artwork of Tyler and Monica Aiello you find the exception.' |
