FEATURED ARTIST STEPHEN LAPTHISOPHON The show title Writing Art Cinema 1977-2007 serves as a marker for Stephen Lapthisophon’s newest exhibition that will include artworks dating between 1977 and 2007 (the years he lived in Chicago, Illinois) and the subject matter he engages: historical writings, art and artists, and movies. One gallery space will show drawings and collages, mostly text based, dating from 1997 to 2007. The text based works explore the associations between his chosen disciplines and how the representation in languageof art, film and thought can become drawing in itself. Many of the text pieces refer to and evoke the Italian artists of the Arte Povera movement of the early 20th century which experimented with nontraditional materials and politically charged ideas. A smaller gallery has been constructed for the purpose of the showing a unique body of candle drawings. The candle drawings carry associations of light, knowledge and also serve as a metaphor for the act of reading.Stephen Lapthisophon studied Comparative Literature and Theory at Northwestern University and received an M.F.A.from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent the next thirty years living and working in the Chicago area. In August of 2007, he relocated to Dallas after spending a residency at the University of Texas at Dallas Artist in Residence program.
