H.M. Saffer has lead a full life and varied art career. Upon graduation from Temple University in 1965, he traveled to Paris, where he leveraged his musical talent. He performed with notable French stars such as Hugues Aufray, Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour, as well as produced several hit records. Throughout his Parisian music years, H.M. continued painting, with his shows always selling out. Before returning to the States in 1970, he completed his graduate studies at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts and exhibited in Paris and Brussels.
His success in Paris captured the attention of Warner Bros. Productions in the States. H.M. not only co-wrote the international hit song "Look What They Done to My Song, Ma" recorded by Ray Charles, but he also painted a 40' mural in the lobby of Warner Bros. New York headquarters. H.M. continued working with the industries leading artists such as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Vicki Carr, and Oliver. He also wrote and produced music for films, commercials, recordings and Broadway productions.
Throughout H.M.'s music career, he never strayed too far from his painting. He continued to refine his methods, while at the same time broaden his scope. In 1981, he began the study of Sumi-e, Japanese brush painting. H.M. left for Japan in 1983 and continued his study of Sumi-e, incorporating the style with his Western traditions. He returned to the States again in 1994, and settled in Upstate New York. Today, his Western style, combined with his Asian influences, create a new and different path towards interpersonal visual expression.
H.M. Saffer's works have been shown in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Belgium and Germany. The Cameron Gallery is delighted in H.M. Saffer joining our stable of talented artists.
