Thornwood Gallery invites the public on Saturday January 9, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 9 p. m. to celebrate the New Year with us in appropriate modern abstract expressionist fashion at the opening of Paint is Paint. The exhibition features a wide variety of the gallery’s artists including Onyeka Ibe, Jacek Rudnicki, Bob Chrzanowski, Sabine Stromeyer, Joshua Wiley, John Schuyler, S. Pinto Souza, and Maxine Price. The abstract works on exhibit recall Clement Greenberg’s proclamation to Jackson Pollock in Pollock, "Paint is paint. Surface is surface. That's all it should be." Abstract art is the embodiment of the “Art for Art’s Sake” movement, a retreat from the didactic and representational that dictated the academic cannon of art until the late 19th century. The artists concentrate on the formalistic relationship of form and color, the physical reality of materials used, and the emotional and physical effects that are evoked from such arrangements. Loose yourself in Onyeka’s textured and atmospheric villages; Stromeyer’s natural materials, impasto surfaces, and vibrant colors; Chrzanowski’s sensual marbled surfaces and the color block compositions of Rudnicki and Schuyler.
