We listen to what they have to say
and, without any preconceived
notions on our part, we come together
to design the place in which they will
be happy to live or work,” said
Thomas. “Every site we work at is
unique and it’s about how to best
serve the area.”
“It’s about being true to the time, to
the present, and inherent to the
quality of the materials we have to
work with,” said Truett of his philosophy
of design. “While we value the history
of architecture, it is the contemporary
historic period that we want to work
within and express. For me For me the
design of each project is based on a
close reading of the Client’s needs
and desires, the physical opportunities
that each site affords and the qualities
of the local building culture.”

Art and design fill the lives of these men as Truett’s wife Carroll is an art teacher at
the East Dallas Community School, and Thomas’ wife, Dr. Dorothy Kosinkski, is senior
curator of painting and sculpture, at the Dallas Museum of Art. In 2008 Dr. Kosinski
will become director of the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.
TKTR architects, pllc, designed five homes at Possum Kingdom and, despite set
guidelines to keep within the Texas vernacular, the two managed to create crisp,
clean lines, bringing a contemporary look with a western flair.
The Gerald Peters Gallery, which last month reopened in the Dallas Design District,
has more than 11,000 square feet with an open floor plan and high ceilings, ideal
for contemporary art exhibits. “Thomas and Truett are exceedingly professional
and thorough and I’d had a wonderful experience working with them before.
There was no question about having them design our new space which is really a
first class space to present art,” said gallery owner, Gerald Peters. “It’s bigger, more
open and perfect for the contemporary works we show.”
The team is behind the beauty at the Santa Fe Arcade, a 3-level, 43,000 square-
foot center which connects the Santa Fe Plaza with Water Street and the
Meadows Museum Sculpture Garden which is set for completion in fall of 2008.
For Thomas, life as an architect came from the dreams of a child’s sandbox –
literally, as his kindergarten teacher reported him the “best builder in the
sandbox.” “I’ve always loved to build and to draw, I can’t remember wanting to
do anything else.”
Truett, an undergraduate student of anthropology, found architecture at the
University of Texas in Austin and hasn’t turned back since. “Through my work I’m
able to engage a lot with the world,” he said. “I appreciate the interaction
between cultural values and the anthropological aspects of this business.”
A Dallas native and St. Marks School, Duke University and UT-Austin graduate,
Truett lived and worked in Philadelphia before returning home to pursue his
career. A graduate of ETH in his hometown of Zurich, Switzerland, Thomas and his
family have made Dallas their home for the past decade.

It’s the shear volume of construction that has exploded around the Metroplex that keeps architects like Thomas Krahenbuhl and Truett Roberts, of TKTR architects, pllc, busier than ever.
The partners joined forces six years ago and the drawing pencils haven’t settled since. “We enjoy working with our clients and that ‘with,’ is very important to us."
